Scripture:  John 3:16

John 3:16  AV For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 

John 3:16  Amplified:  For God so greatly loved and dearly prized the world that He [even] gave up His only begotten (unique) Son, so that whoever believes in (trusts in, clings to, relies on) Him, shall not perish (come to destruction, be lost) but have eternal (everlasting) life. 

Note:  The Bible says that even the devils believe and tremble.  But when the new testament uses the word believe in this context, it speaks of a relationship between a believer and his LORD where the believer trusts in, clings to, and relies on Him.  It is referring to having a personal relationship with JESUS CHRIST our LORD.
